Can girls play?

My first post was a nice fluffy piece about yobbos in sport, but now it's time to tackle an issue that's political, controversial and a little bit feminine.

Today at work, one of my colleagues brought up the issue about women on the front-line in the military.  He asked me if I thought it compared at all to a lass being able to play in the AFL.

After approximately 17 seconds of gobsmacked silence I informed him that war and football were considerably different and quietly tacked on that he was a tool.

Major differences between Footy and War.

- short shorts / bullet proof vests
- banners / trenches
- pies / slop
- Collingwood supporters / the enemy
- fun / hell

On a serious note, war it hell and no-one should have to participate...but unfortunately that's the current way of the world.  Hats off to all the guys and gals that are abroad and serving the country bravely.

I told the guy at work that if a woman was physically, mentally and emotionally equal to the men and she had a strong desire to fight for her country, then why shouldn't she be able to fight alongside the men?  It got me thinking....

The huge can of worms was well and truly open.  If a woman had the same physicality, skill level and tactical aptitude of a bloke, why shouldn't they be able to play for Richmond, Essendon or the Suns.

Before you blokes start twittering me death threats, hold your horses.  The thought of chicks in the AFL scares the pooh out of me to, but it's only fair that I come up with some valid reasons to rule out such a crazy suggestion.

First reason is: Do the Dads out there want Aaron Sandilands sticking his size 15 boot into the beautiful, blemish free face of their little angel?...  I don't think so Tim.

Second reason: Do the Mums out there want there little princess urinating up against a building after a celebratory night out with team-mate Brendon Fevola?...  No way!

Third reason:  Do the boyfriends out there want their "Honey bear" copping a right hook to the kisser from Barry Hall when they tell him his bum looks big in his footy shorts?...  That's a big no skipper.

On the other side of the coin, do the guys in the AFL really want to knock the living suitcase out of the nations star female footballers?  Very doubtful...Maybe? (kidding...I'm kidding)

There is a place in sport for the ladies to mix it with the lads, but the AFL is not it.  Like the W-League and the WNBL, there may be an arena for our top girls to get "up there Cazaly" at the highest level...one day.

Until then I thinks it's best to let the fairer sex tackle the tasks where the men have no clue......like running the country?......Tragic.

  1. I did have a stint playing AFL and loved it, I did concuss a player (pure accident) too :) I really don't think that men and women should compete against each other at an elite level...just look at amateur hour at your local indoor basketball location....enough said.

  2. Nice entertaining post. Call me chivalrous or a sexist but I would have to agree with the tool as he may have some valid points against allowing women on the frontline.

First reason is: Do the Dads out there want al-Awlaki sticking his AK-47 barrel into the beautiful, blemish free face of their little angel?... NO Seargent!

Second reason: Do the Mums out there want there little princess urinating in a cold, dark and foreign shell scrape with that towie (lonely) young man/men from down town Beenleigh... No MAM!

Third reason: Do the boyfriends out there want their "possum pie" copping a face full of pellets from claymore mine when she is on routine patrol?... That's a big no SIR!

On the other side of the coin, do the beards fighting jihad for Al-Qaeda want to fight the nations elite female Frontline combatants with the hope of sending them home unrecognisable on the back of a Herc in a body bag? Highly likely...For sure. Without a shadow of a doudt.

  3. Adam, why is it that Essendom, Richmond and the Suns are the only AFL teams woman should be entitled to play for??? Navy blue and white horizontal striped guernseys would suit a female counterpart much better!! As for the reasons why females shouldn't play AFL and be on the front line, im sure the mums and dads out there wouldn't want their ostentatious, flamboyant sons, such as Jimmy Bartel from Geelong, getting their blemish free model face jeopardised either, we think its a personal choice whether a male or female wants to play afl, or fight in the front line, if they are good enough.

  4. Some good points anonymous. These teams were merely examples and the first to pop into my fragile little mind. I love your point of view...it's got real balls! Cheers.
